Sixteen J/70 teams competed in the Royal Southern’s Salcombe Gin July Regatta which was a scoring event as Round Four of the J/70 UK Grand Slam Series and Round Three of the Sprint Series. With no racing possible due to a lack of wind on the first day, sailors did have the opportunity of complimentary cocktails from the Salcombe Distillery Co. and a barbeque prepared by the Royal Southern Yacht Club.

Winners were decided with five races on the final day in unpredictable breeze. It was a day for heads out of the boat. Spotting and reacting to the ever changing conditions were the recipe to success.

Nick Phillips’ Chaotic scored four podium finishes to win the regatta. The team from Parkstone Yacht Club showed astute awareness in the fickle breeze to score their first regatta win since joining the class last year. Martin Dent’s Jelvis scored a third and first in the final two races, to finish open runner-up. Charles Thompson’s Brutus II was the top Corinthian team, winning the final race to take third in the open class above Doug Struth’s DSP.
