The UK J/70 Class is pleased to announce that RaceSense technology, powered by the Vakaros Atlas 2, will be officially adopted for all UK J/70 Grand Slam events starting in 2026.
This decision follows the proven success of RaceSense at major international events and represents a significant step forward in delivering fairer, faster, and more efficient racing for both sailors and race officials.
Proven at the Highest Level
RaceSense has already demonstrated its value on the world stage. Most notably, at the 2024 J/70 World Championship in Palma, the system enabled nine clean races with zero general recalls, despite challenging conditions for the race management team. Achieving this level of consistency and accuracy would have been extremely difficult without the technology.
Building on this success, the UK J/70 Class is confident that adopting RaceSense will enhance race quality, reduce delays, and improve the overall experience at Grand Slam events.
Key Benefits for Sailors
The introduction of RaceSense brings a number of tangible benefits for competitors:
Smarter, More Reliable Starts
With RaceSense, there is no need for manual pinging. Committee Vessel (CV) and pin positions are transmitted directly to each Atlas 2, with line bias provided automatically.
Any changes to the line can be made right up to the four-minute signal without delaying the start or requiring boats to re-ping. Start timers auto-sync with the Race Officer’s signal, eliminating timing errors and disputes.
Real-Time OCS Detection
Boats instantly know if they are over the line, with clear visual feedback onboard and for the race committee. This removes judgement calls, allows OCS boats to return sooner, and virtually eliminates general recalls.
Automatic Finishing
Automated finish recording streamlines results processing, reduces pressure on the finish team, and enables faster race turnarounds — meaning more time racing and less time hanging around.
What This Means for 2026
From 2026 onwards, a Vakaros Atlas 2 will be required for all boats competing in UK J/70 Grand Slam events.
This move also aligns the UK Class with wider international standards.
Alignment with International J/70 Racing
The J/70 International Class now mandates the use of RaceSense for Continental and World Championships, and several national J/70 class associations are already using, or planning to adopt, the technology. The UK J/70 Class’s decision ensures consistency with international best practice and future-proofs our major events.
