18 boats turned out for the first ever J/70 Summer Championships, hosted by the Royal Yacht Squadron. After 7 races, the Champion was Jeremy Thorp, new owner of J/70 Joyride.
“It was great for us to get out for our first regatta in the J70. It was a very windy Saturday, significantly more than forecast and the race officers decided to call it after two races with a steady 28Kn on the dial. Some of the boats were having a real struggle to keep the boat under the rig downwind. Sunday was just a fraction lighter and the race officer set very short three lap courses which were excellent for practice, bunching the boats together and putting crew work at a premium.
The RYS race team did a perfect job in setting appropriate courses, on the right axis and were always efficient in getting us away and excellent in communication their intentions. The Saturday evening event was also very nice with an excellent hog roast.
The PHAN team are on a steep learning curve and I think we were learning something each race. I really enjoyed my Etchells racing last year but pulling off a planing jibe to jibe at 15kn in the J70 is something else. Thanks to Mal, Martin and John for getting me round in great shape. Our last race for a while as the guys have other things on but we are looking forward to a full programme next year.”
The class would like to thank the Royal Yacht Squadron for hosting an excellent regatta.
