Royal Thames feast for J/70 UK Class

15 J/70 teams turned out for a fantastic weekend of racing for the Royal Thames Yacht Club’s J/70 Southern Area Championships. Round Four of the Grand Slam Series for the J/70 UK Class.

Congratulations to Paul Ward’s Eat Sleep J Repeat and Jonathan Calascione’s Calypso, respective winners of the Open and Corinthian Divisions for the Royal Thames Yacht Club’s J/70 Southern Area Championships. Calypso was also second overall in the Open Division with Charles Thompson’s Brutus in third. Second to Calypso in the Corinthian Division was the youth team racing Jeepster skippered by Max Clapp. The Simpson and Bettum families racing Dads “N” Lads took the final podium position by the narrowest of margins. Tim Collins EV Experts and Ian Poynton’s Powder Monkey both missed the podium by a single point. David McLeman’s Offbeat and Duncan McCarthy’s Elmaki were both just two points off the podium.

Calypso helm and J/70 UK Class Captain Marshall King summed up a glorious regatta: “A fantastic weekend of racing, delivering like only the Solent can, expertly run by the RTYC team.”

The Solent delivered superb racing conditions with a brisk south westerly wind and the infamous Solent tide providing a devilishly exciting race track which was used to the full by the Royal Thames Race Team, led by Phil Hagen. All six scheduled races were completed with the race management thunderously applauded by the J/70 Class.

Round 5 of the J/70 UK Class Grand Slam Series will take place next weekend at the J/70 UK National Championship, which will be part of the Key Yachting J-Cup organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club from the 30th June to 3rd July. 22 J/70 teams have already entered.
